"we Christians are a bunch of scheming schwidlers"

"The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. Herein lies the real place of Christian scholarship. Christian scholarship is the Church's prodigious invention to defend itself against the Bible, to ensure that we can continue to be good Christians without the Bible coming too close. Dreadful it is to fall into the hands of the living God. Yes, it is even dreadful to be alone with the New Testament."
Soren Kierkegaard
Agreed.

It's much easier to take worship to new levels, refine models for how Christian relationships "should" be, debate whether it's right to give money to someone in the street, write insightful notes on Christian blogs and all have a nice chat about Islam.

It only becomes hard when you work out how to wrestle that with being a socially nice and acceptable person, who can keep their current job and status.

Your fellow scheming swindler in Christ, living life in the corporate world with my Cross well and truly planted in the ground for the time being,

amen, a sad amen.
and how long ago did he write that?
There's little doubt that what often passes for bible study is merely a christian placebo.
I suppose what's really happening is that as we think we are studying the bible, God is in fact studying us, through our attitude and response to his very clear instructions. Help me!
