Welcome to Zimbabwe

I thought I was finally over this topic but the other night I heard our ersatz president Thabo Mbeki refer to Robert Mugabe as “President” Robert Mugabe. I don’t know if I’m missing something but Robert Mugabe is not the president of Zimbabwe under the laws of the SADC, the AU or the UN so how the hell did this happen??

Even by the SADC’s extremely lax standards, the presidential elections in Zimbabwe were ruled not to be free or fair. What makes the situation so hilarious is that even though the SADC ruled the elections to be a sham, the illegitimate Zimbabwean government suffered not a single sanction or punishment within the SADC community, which renders this whole process meaningless. I know I should really stop caring about this, or the fact that our failed president Thabo Mbeki remains the principal life support system for Mugabe’s tyranny, but here is a rather amusing poem I wrote about the situation.

Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
I am president for life
Only God can remove me
Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
We are a democratic nation here
You are free to vote for me
Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
You will live a long and prosperous life
If you do what I tell you
Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
I set you free from the British pig
You will never be in chains again
Your life is worth too much to me
Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
We are a peaceful country now
I sit with the great men of Africa
Who say there is no crisis here
Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
I am father to little Thabo
He is the president of South Africa now
I am very proud of him
Welcome to Zimbabwe

My name is Robert Mugabe
I am president for life
Only God can remove me
Welcome to Zimbabwe
Good one Tuberider!  Having just come back from there myself I completely agree that Zimbabwe hads no president.  We are pretty much a lesderless state.

Botswana has a good stand on the whole thing refusing to call him President and referring to him just as Robert Mugabe.

Don't stop caring about this stuff. This is what we're supposed to do here - care for each other and pray for those places where Gods freedom needs to break through.

As for Robert Mugabe saying "God only can remove me from power" he is going to find out soon enough that he should be careful what he challenges the man up there to.

Keep praying and stuff - it's good to know that the people who are worrying about Zimbabwe aren't only the Zimbabweans.  Its a bit like the days when Brother Andrew headed behind the Iron Curtain back in the day - some people there feel that they have been forgotten...

I must say though that God is moving. Amidst all the political and economic stuff God is getting ready to really move within the nation.  I really believe that.

Don't stop worrying about it.  We need to care about this.

My friends and I are always thinking and praying about it.

phew - a bit of a long comment.  sorry.  I am not really blogging at the moment so do forgive the lengthiness - it's almost a mini-post. :-o

All things said and done - how are you doing?
x
thanks daxie. I'm very well. In fact, just the other day I saw 6 whales cavorting in the bay. They were so close I could have swum out to them! Oh yeah it's good to be back .....

and how are you doing?

I could talk all day about this politics thing but I do my best to restrain myself :)

There are pockets of progress in Africa and ultimately I believe that Africa has all the resources and the people necessary to build a great continent. I really do believe this. I also believe that in Africa there is a two tier system at play being the "ruling class" and the "ruled." God forbid “the ruled” should be unhappy with their lot and try change the status quo and threaten the benefits that accrue to the "ruling class."

If ordinary Africans were left to their own devices, free from the interference of oppressive governments there is absolutely no doubt in my mind this continent would take off. Please do read the article below by the excellent Kenyan journalist, Binyavanga Wainaina.

as he writes:
Our country is an imperium: as we were in colonial days, African bodies at the service of an imperial political class that designs all policy to perpetuate itself.

This guy seriously gets it and slowly, slowly I believe change is going to come God willing.
