Valhalla

I’ve been writing a lot of poetry lately. I like nothing better than sitting down at night and writing poems. I find it so relaxing. You’d better believe it. I read an interview by the writer Margaret Atwood where she said that if you want to write a good poem, write lots of them (the theory being some of them will be good). This is going to be my strategy from here on out. I do regret not taking one of the many excellent creative writing courses in London while I was over there. Once I’m a little more settled I’ll try getting myself onto one in Cape Town.

Anyway, here is a poem I wrote for my lovely elder sister. She wanted a poem that rhymes :( ……. it’s based on the Norse mythology of the Northern Lights.

Valhalla

Swallowed by an eternal sleep
I saw a Valkryie at my feet
With blazing eyes and fiery hair
She swept me up into the air

Far beyond the clouds we soared
Past the ancient stars that roared
We came upon the Northern Lights
In all the colours of the night

Throughout heaven she did wield
Flashing light from her golden shield
Emerald streams of orange green
Transformed into a yellow beam

Then under banners proudly arched
Maiden warriors and heroes marched
Across the Rainbow Bridge that lies
Before the gates of paradise

Some other news ….. the other day, I took my niece surfing for the first time at Muizenberg. I rented a long board for her and spent 2 hours in the water showing her the ropes. I was hoping that she would stand up at least once but in the end she stood up 5 times! Result. Yesterday, she won a brand new surfboard in a raffle. Can you believe that!! (R10 raffle ticket = R3,000 surfboard) woohoo & it’s her birthday today….. weehee….

So happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you ……
That's flippin' brilliant!!!! what's the secret to your magic? i'd quite like a power kite and wakeboard Father Tuberider! ;-D

happy birthday niece!
Hi thanks very much Ray. The first verse came in seconds but the rest of it was a grind :( This is not my normal style to be honest. I'm all for free verse & no rhyming. It's a lot easier. I did purposely try keep it simple.

Kiteboarding is all the rage here in CT. There is tons of wind for it but I hear it's quite tricky and you can get seriously injured. For now I think I'll stick to surfing.
oh dear! Last night it hit me like a falling truck in that I got confused with your note Ray.

I thought it was RayM talking about poetry and not Ray talking about surfing. I take that all back then.

but did you know that the weekend before we took in a stray dog, reported it to the vet and found its owner only to win this raffle 2 days later.

DOESN'T GOD LOVE ALL HIS CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL HEY!!
He does indeed! That's great about your niece's new surfboard :)
