Went to a church in Germany this morning and was surprised by some of the songs that we sung. They weren't bad or anything, in fact some were songs I quite like, such as 'Open the eyes of my heart Lord' (Herr, öffne du mir die Augen). What was perhaps more surprising was that in this very small church, in a hemogenously German area, they sung about half the songs in English. I know God can understand all languages (even if the congregation can't), but you might think that with the Germanic musical heritage (Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert...) they might not feel the need to look to other languages for musical inspiration.
