Book review: His Dark Materials Trilogy, Philip Pullman

So what am I doing reading anti-Christian fiction?  ‘His Dark Materials’ is a trilogy regarded by readers of the fantasy genre as the best thing since Lord of the Rings.  The big controversy (well in Christian circles anyway) is that it paints a highly negative portrayal of the church (in the same vein as Dan Brown, but it was released 3 years earlier in 2001).  In the same vein as the Narnia chronicles and Lord of the Rings, the book is also aimed at children.

I can see why the London Marathon attracts so many runners.  The atmosphere was amazing on race day, with crowds of cheering people lining the route (despite the constant drizzle of rain) and the sea of runners, superheroes, villains and wombles (!) representing a multitude of charities.  The crowds were smiling and supportive, urging on all the runners and offering us sweets help keep us going.

Running the Race

As some of you will probably be aware, it's the London Marathon tomorrow.  Along with 35,000 other people, I'll be there in the thick of it, continually trying to move a couple more feet along that blue line which marks out the course.
