Nor Man's Empty Praise

Be Thou My Vision

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

Does anyone else find the second part of the first line of the third verse of this hymn diffficult?

The words 'nor man's empty praise' have been swimming around my head for a few days now.

It is not that i necessarily seek the attention of man, but rather, I am affected by someones rude/nasty/unelpful words or indeed the lack of kind ones sometimes. They sometimes cut deep. These can be from different people, colleagues, friends, strangers.

Do I heed mans praise too much? Should we heed mans praise at all?

mm, always a good thing to keep in your mind.

I certainly have difficulty with this and it's always something that you struggle with, living in the world.

I read a lovely comment by Desmond Tutu last week where he was going to get an honourary degree from the Uni of Washington.  They phoned to get measurments for his gown and mortarboard.  He said the gown measurments were no problem but the hat was more difficult as the size of his head varied from day to day!
Ha ha, that is so true, one day huge one day small, How you doing Kami?

It's easy to swing either way based on what people say about or to us. I suppose the song means more that no matter what people say, God is bigger, higher, and more worthy - and that's how He sees us too. In comparison to this love and grace from God, man's praise IS empty.

Don't let your head get too big to get on the minibus though eh? ;) j/k
