I’m reading this book called music and the mind, well I read it on and off and I never get to the end but anyway, it has some theories in it about the origins of music.
 
This is Darwins theory…
 
‘The suspicion does not appear improbable that the progenitors of man, either the males or the females, or both sexes, before they had acquired the power of expression of their mutual love in articulate language, endeavoured to charm each other with musical notes and rhythm. The impassioned orator, bard, or musician, when with his various tones and cadences he excites the strongest emotions in his hearers, little suspects that he uses the same means by which, at an extremely remote period, his half-human ancestors aroused each other’s ardent passions during their mutual courtship and rivalry.’
 
It’s about expressing love, so powerful.
 
When I got to this bit in the book (the first time) I was like YES THAT’S IT! That is really where music originates from! It is much more appealing than the other suggestions – that it originated from bird call or from the need to communicate over long distance – they are totally unemotional ideas! Although being a classical musician…………….
 
But just now I was thinking, what if music was around before the world existed? Job 38:7 says ‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? …. Bla bla….. while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?’

So it originated from God! I’m a bit slow yes, but anyway, it says in Genesis (1:27) that he created us in his image, so he must be a musician, right, he’s definitely creative!? Maybe he put music in our heart and in its purest form it is a love language between us and him. And I’m not just talking about the worship in church. Imagine if all music really was an act of communication between us and God!
 
And imagine what the music on the new earth will be like! With our perfect bodies we will all be able to express perfectly our intentions! Amazing!
