From Mark Russell's blog...

"The Church is apparently losing young adults, cannot engage with them, and is unable to harness their gifts. Yet there was 350 young adults passionate about their faith, and desperate to serve God with their lives. The Church of England would do well to ask how does HTB do it?

Climate change needs "post normal" science!

I saw in the Guardian yesterday a really extraordinary article by Mike Hulme, a professor and the founding director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia. I could hardly believe what I was reading. Here's a taste:

What matters about climate change is not whether we can predict the future with some desired level of certainty and accuracy (ie we can't); it is whether we have sufficient foresight, supported by wisdom (ie we have opinions not facts), to allow our perspective about the future, and our responsibility for it, to be altered. All of us alive today have a stake in the future, and so we should all play a role in generating sufficient, inclusive and imposing knowledge (ie forcing people to think like us) about the future. Climate change is too important to be left to scientists - least of all the normal ones.

The essence of the article seems to be, "the science does not support taking drastic action on carbon emissions, we therefore clearly need a new kind of "science"." I was so stunned by this doublethink I kept it open to write something about it. But Melanie Phillips has beaten me to the punch.

God returns to Europe

John Humphrys in the Telegraph - very intersting article.

"Prospect - the intellectuals' favourite monthly magazine - seems to think so. It has an influence out of all proportion to its tiny circulation and a reputation for its rigorously highbrow approach and its front page recently carried the pretty unambiguous headline: "God returns to Europe".

Modernity's End

Very rarely I read something that really makes me sit up. Michael Vlahos's fascinating essay is one such. It argues that modernity is finished. That just like the Roman empire was doomed but took centuries to die - so will modernity.

"Modernity’s greatest failure is spiritual—neon-lit in Europe, where old piety has crashed and burned. But among the global other scorched by modernity’s “creative destruction,” it is not that people have abandoned piety but that it has abandoned them. In globalization’s mixing bowl, the meditative power of old ethos has been lost. Yet American modernity offers nothing to take its place: just ask an Afghani or an Iraqi.

Piety is a cry for meaning in a stripped world. Two movements stand out: the Pentecostalist and the Islamist. Both share a deep repudiation of the Western nation state as the supreme human ideal—not because they are intrinsically anti-Western but because they see modernity as antithetical to what people need. If this seems harsh, just feel the fervor and the fulfillment they offer.

Is global warming important?

Many Christians regard reducing carbon emissions as an important (or even the) moral issue of the day. I don't see it that way - here's why...
