This weekend I went to my cousin's wedding which was held at The Golf View Hotel in Nairn to see him get married to a lovely Scottish girl called Jenny. Nairn is near Inverness, right up north in Scotland and the hotel was on the Moray Firth which is stunning.
The weather was a once in a lifetime experience for the Scots as it was 29 degrees and we even got sun burnt! In Scotland! The sunny weather meant that the service was held outside with the firth as the background. Jenny (much to our amusement) insisted that the groom (my cousin - a burly policeman), the best man (his brother) & ushers (his other 2 brothers - identical twins) and my uncle, the father of the groom wore kilts! Now, if you know that side of the family (who are my English/Kenyan side) this is quite an amusing sight. My uncle wore his kilt with a nice little safari sunhat and the two ushers/best man wore their kilts with flipflops. After the ceremony and before the reception my uncle and the bestman decided to strip off completely and jump into the sea - well, it was hot - but I didn't see any of the other guests running around naked at a civilised wedding at a golf hotel... Nothing like introducing the "other side of the family" to your boyfriend for the first time (and he thought the Dutch side were the "wacky" ones with their liberal ways...). The wedding was a pure Scottish affair - in addition to the kilts there was the lone bagpiper, haggis (!), the hardened whisky drinkers with their red cheeks and noses, Scottish dancing and as the sun set (not until about 11pm up there) the dreaded midges. What a wonderful family wedding and we represented the oldest wedding guest (my Granny age 90) and the youngest (my niece, only 6 months old and Granny's great-grandchild!).
