As I haven't posted I just thought I would let people know about the great flood of July 20th. I have just started working at Boots Opticians as the new pre-registration optometrist so I went to work in the morning on the bus. The weather was awful, torrential rain that has been falling most of the night but thankfully I got to work just fine. At lunch time the rain was still falling and I heard reports that one of the main routes to my village on the outskirts of Cheltenham had been cut off by flooding. This was the bus route so the buses were no longer running. It tried ringing my parents who were also in work in Cheltenham but read through my sister who was at home that they would pick me up at 6 o'clock. My team leader who lived nearby offered me a lift home early because of the flooding but I declined the offer because my parents said they would pick me up. As the day went on the rain continued and more and more staff left early. I was on the late 6pm shift but at about 4.20 I was told the store was closing early so people could get home. Then I managed to contact my parents who said they would pick me up at 5pm. After waiting for them I joined them in the car and we began to explore the various routes out of Cheltenham to Bishop's Cleeve and Woodmancote. As we were told that Presbury and the Racecourse areas of Cheltenham were closed due to flooding we decided to try Swindon village. When we got there we found a van with the water up to it's windows, so we assumed that route was impassible.

Dad decided to try a road through a little village called Brockhampton. That was flooded but we though we could wade through it. However, as we were approaching on foot we met a man who told us his van had just been swept away so we decided that it wasn't a good idea. So we went to Sainsbury's to get something to eat and regroup. After some deliberation we decided to try and get to Tewkesbury and get to Woodmancote from the northern side as we knew all the other routes were impassible. Then we joined the Tewkesbury road which was pretty slow and partially flooded but ok for our car which was a small Peugeot 206. After some time we decided to join the M5 heading north to Tewkesbury. When we joined it was slow but moving but as we headed north it got worse. By the time we left it it was about 9pm. We turned right of the junction and very slowly headed through Ashchurch towards Woodmancote. After passing through some very deep puddles we were told by a volunteer that the road was only passable for lorries and completely blocked further down nearer Woodmancote. So we turned arount and contracted one of my mum's friends who lived near Tewkesbury who offered us to sleep on her floor, saying that she had already 4 other people staying. Heading into Tewkesbury we found the road completely blocked and a small car like ours upto its roof in water. So we turned around and parking Tewkesbury school. At this point the M5 was closed north and south bound so all the traffic started to come off the motorway. We got out and decided to walk/wade about 30mins to my mum's friend. But as we got closer we realised that we would have to swim. So we saw a pub and decided to go in to get a drink. The pub was fully of lots of 'merry' people. At 12am they had a proper 'lock-in' as the doors were locked to prevent the rising water coming in. At this point we excaped through a side entrance and with shoes and socks removed waded through the car park to higher ground. We walked back to the car and decided to stay the night. Dad couldn't sleep so he went to check on the M5 which by this point had become completely flooded and had abandoned cars everywhere. Lots of helicopters went overhead all night. At about 3 I decided to join my parents in Tewkesbury school which had been opened as a refuge centre and had a cup of tea. At about 5am Dad who was still awake had heard that the Ashchurch route to Woodmancote had improved so he joined the queue of traffic out. The roads were a lots better but there were stills some bad flooding. Thankfully we managed to make it back home by about 6.15am and I went straight to sleep. I was woken at 8am in time to get ready for work. The roads around Woodmancote had much improved by this time and we forded through most of them in to town in order to drop me off for a full day of work.
