Right, this isn't a blurb on all the things that I don't do or don't do enough. This is all about the things that I don't recognise that I do. If you ask me what I did today I'll probably say that I went to work and then homegroup (for the first time in ages). These are the things that I focus on and use to define my day and, if I'm honest, myself.
Yet there are so many other things that I do that I don't 'mean to do', they 'just happen naturally.' Like make someone smile, or open a door, or make way for someone, or to talk to someone etc. I don't really recognise any of this stuff. I don't take it seriously.
And I compound my nonchalance when I reply 'It's nothing really' to a positive comment, usually thanking me. Yet it is something, that's why they mentioned it. I didn't have to do it, but I did. There is greater meaning to what we do than what we know.
Now I don't expect that you or I should keep a mental note of every little thing that we do - that is a certain path to madness. Rather, when someone notes it simply say thank you. This not only reinforces the action as positive in your mind but also gives them the satisfaction of doing something positive themselves as now you feel better.
The reason I came to this was trying to seek a practical way of seeing what you do as being about more than just you. Any action of yours is not restricted to how you view it or what you think it will do. If it is Christ-following then the action will follow God's plan and none of us know the mind of God.
