Jesus christ, the same yesterday, today and forever, Or Why Wales wont win the world cup

In just under a week the rugby world cup starts. As a passionate armchair sports fan I love any kind of international sports tournament, but the rugby world cup is one of my favourites. In fact the first time I ever went to see a big sporting occasion was back in 1991 at the rugby world cup, when it was staged in Britain. I went with my dad to watch Wales vs. Argentina – it was fantastic for an 11 year old boy. Big occasion. The old Cardiff Arms Park filled with passionate welsh fans, eager for their team to do well. Of course the singing at any Wales game is special, and this was my first experience of it in the flesh. It was an evening game, played under floodlights, and of course any sporting occasion is somehow magnified when played under lights. It was in may ways the perfect introduction to welsh rugby. To be honest though I cant really remember that much about the game, except that it wasn’t a classic. And Wales scraped a narrow victory over a team that on paper at least was ranked well below them. Of course in general at the start of the 90’s the welsh rugby team was going through a bit of a low patch, and that resulted in us failing to make the knockout round, losing humiliatingly in the group stages to western Samoa, leading to English people all over the country pointing out to any welsh friends or relatives that if that was the result against western Samoa, imagine what the whole of Samoa could do. (And people wonder why the welsh have such a strong antipathy to the English?!)

Been busy

OK. SInce I last wrote I've achieved 3 things.

1.)   I discovered facebook. Admittedly I'm not the first person to discover it, but still, it feels like an achievement to me. Its brilliant, and has of course taken over my life.

2.)  I realised how fantastically unfit I feel at the moment. Played football last night, and been out running a few times recently - but OH SO MUCH MORE needs to be done to rid myself of an attractive beer belly that currently resides under my t-shirt.

Made me laugh...

Have a look at this youtube clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=ScWdek6_IdsIts sad, but its true! People maybe aren't as blatant as this guy, but lets face it, there's a lot more "me" in worship than there should be.

Not to criticise any modern worship leader in particualr, because I think that so many are truly being used by god to bring people in closer and deeper relationship with him, but there are a disturbing number of songs in our modern songbooks that start with the phrase "I..."

Darfur crisis reaches Google Earth

Reading the BBC news pages this morning (as I like to do, y'know to keep "in touch" and "down wit da kidz") I read with interest a story about Google earth's efforts to higlight the crisis in Darfur by creating a special highlighter to mark Darfur on their global satellite images.

I'm posting this blog to do my little bit via this website to highlight and support the attempt to raise awareness - Google say they plan to track whether use of the Darfur site sparks new community and political action on the internet. Dont know whether this is entirely from disinterested motives - after all if they can prove they can affect public awareness of issues, change opinions etc then its only a small step before they can set themselves up as kingmakers - pay us a fee and we'll make sure your issue, whatever it may, be is highlighted. But maybe I'm being paranoid, (this is the internet after all!) maybe they are doing this from pure motives. I hope so. But either way, its a good thing that the world sits up and takes more notice of the situation in Darfur, and puts pressure on the Sudanese government to allow a peace-keeping mission to be deployed there.

First entry...

Blogs always seem a bit self-indulgent, and I'd love to think that's why I'm poor at utilising them - because my inner sense of humility somehow prevents me from creating a web page where the focus of attention is me, my thoughts, my musings, my ideas, my... you get the picture! But lets face it, thats not true. The reason why i'm so pants poor at keeping a blog uptodate is because I'm terminally unorganised, and unlikely to see something through unless I really have to!
