Reading the BBC news pages this morning (as I like to do, y'know to keep "in touch" and "down wit da kidz") I read with interest
a story about Google earth's efforts to higlight the crisis in Darfur by creating a special highlighter to mark Darfur on their global satellite images.
I'm posting this blog to do my little bit via this website to highlight and support the attempt to raise awareness - Google say they plan to track whether use of the Darfur site sparks new community and political action on the internet. Dont know whether this is
entirely from disinterested motives - after all if they can prove they can affect public awareness of issues, change opinions etc then its only a small step before they can set themselves up as kingmakers - pay us a fee and we'll make sure your issue, whatever it may, be is highlighted. But maybe I'm being paranoid, (this is the internet after all!) maybe they are doing this from pure motives. I hope so. But either way, its a good thing that the world sits up and takes more notice of the situation in Darfur, and puts pressure on the Sudanese government to allow a peace-keeping mission to be deployed there.
