Erroll Garner - a geniusDecember 26, 2006 - 10:33pm | email this page
One of my biggest influences in jazz piano is the great Erroll Garner (1921 - 1977). ![]() The driving swing, laid back right hand, big fat chords and the sheer joy one gets from listening to him really resonates with me. When asked about his great talent, he was reported to have said "The good Lord gave it to me and I'm trying to develop it". The modern jazz fraternity have sometimes dismissed him as sounding 'old fashioned' (as they seem to do with every jazz pianist before Bill Evans) but I say, so what? it still sounds great, old or new. There is a cool video him playing here: http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=JiIlrWDBttk Here is a recording I did recently of an old tune called 'Undecided' , in a vain attempt to play in Erroll' s style: Enjoy!
