Tandems and trust

Went to bruge with the hubs last week for a 2-for-1 eurostar 2*hotel deal.
and we learnt something about ourselves...
we just don't do city breaks!
It's not a break - its constant dodging of korean tourists, arrogant school kids in never-ending lines who hog the pavement, streets that smell of wee and very mad cyclists!
our only refuge was the small hotel room with a view of the window next door... aahh.

Now, I enjoyed visiting churches and galleries and museums, but once I'd done a few, i was over it!

Holiday's for us = middle of nowhere + water + quiet + fresh air + HEAT!
Why are there never any 2-for-1 deals going there???

BUT, before you think I hated Bruges - there were 2 things that saved it:

1. The FOOD - mussels, chips, waffels, pancakes, rabbit stew (!!) ... heavenly and affordable.

2. TANDEM BICYCLES!

We hired a tandem bike on the 2nd day and spent 3 hours circuiting bruges along the canal - a bit of fresh air, water, and heat (generated by excersize rarely done)... a few ingredients of the perfect holiday.

Picture it - Philip on the front and me on the back... Philip with full control of steering, brakes, power - me in control of nothing - except my voice!
I'd like to say i handled this trust issue with dignity and that I managed to stay calm and collected... but that would be lying. All the promises of trust I made to Philip on our wedding day? gone! (for those 3 hours anyway)

We discovered something fascinating - instead of my voice become higher with increasing panic levels, it went in the opposite direction, resulting in a kind of growl at panic's peak...

AND to make things worse - Philip just laughed!
oh the joys of marriage.

In conclusion (and for the record) - riding the tandem was educational - and a lot of fun too!

SO - I do think you should go to Bruges if you've haven't been - but you can do it in a day...

and RENT A TANDEM!

I can just picture the two of you on that contraption!
Hmmm I don't think Bruges is a good option for a break - it's tiny and as you say the only redeeming factor is the food - chips & mayonnaise I seem to remember being a particular favourite!
i went to Bruges by myself... clearly a mistake cause i had no one to tandem with and have not, therefore, been enlightened as to what my 'aahhh i'm going to die' (not to sound discouraging about Philip's navigating skills) voice sounds like :-)
