Is technology (in education) being spent on the wrong people?

Sugata Mitra speaks about the impact of technology on education, and argues that whereas we are concentrating most of the technology in schools in rich areas, a lot more impact would be had if that money was aimed at remote, poorer areas. He talks about the project he runs in India where they install computers in remote communities (looking like an ATM machine, just in the street) and the impact that approach has had.

Narciso is an Armonia AIMS student in the final year of his 'Prepa' (equivalent to Senior year of high school I think) and is living in Casa Oaxaca. In case you haven't worked it out, that means he is Mexican, and a friend of mine. He told me in the summer he was following my blog, and wanted to know how to start his own. So here he is, making his debut in the world of blogging, here on About Life.

Forgot to blog this from my time in Oaxaca...

One evening on dish washing duties (which takes some time when you consider the group was around 60 people), I was chatting at length to Benito (one of the new older brothers of the Oaxaca house).

He asked what my favourite bands were. After admitting that I was somewhat out of touch with music of people his age (18) in the UK, he pressed me further to what I listen to. When I mentioned I like to listen to worship his face lit up.

First day back at school

Today is the first day back of the new school year for most Mexican primary school children.

These 6 are no exception.

Despite some angelic names and lovely smiles, these kids have really had some tough battles to fight already in their short lives. Last year 3 of them were excluded from school, and the other 3 have been out of school for a long time (if indeed they ever went).
